Who Am I To Do This?

Scripture:
Exodus3:2-12
(NASB)

The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. So Moses said, “I must turn aside now and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” He said also, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Then Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

The Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings. So I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. Now, behold, the cry of the sons of Israel has come to Me; furthermore, I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them.

Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” And He said, “Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.”

Devotional:

Have you ever looked at something in wonder and awe?  Some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets I have ever seen were out at sea.  Being on a carrier in the middle of the ocean brings beauty that most people miss out on.  In those rare quiet moments you can almost forget where you are and just be in God’s presence.  Unlike Moses I have never heard a burning bush speak out to me.  I often think I don’t hear God’s voice.  But if I am honest with myself I know in those quiet moments God is speaking.  There have been times when God has called me to something and I answered like Moses did.  I simply ask God who am I to do this.  Surely there are those who are more gifted and qualified than I am.  Surely one of the older gentlemen in the men’s group can give a better devotional than I can.  Surely someone else can write better than I can someone who is wiser and smarter.  But God answers me with a simple answer.  “I didn’t ask someone else to do it.  I asked you to.”

Is God calling out to you?  Is He asking you to do something you feel you cannot do?  It is too much or there are others more qualified for the task.  Are you turning away in fear, or in denial?  Whatever the reason for you to ignore God’s call I urge you to pause a moment.  Stop to think about what He is asking.  God answers Moses in verse 12, “…Certainly I will be with you,…”  You can boldly go forth and know that God is with you.  Just as He was with Moses, and look at what happened there, He will be with you.

If God can deliver an entire nation out of the most powerful nation at the time, he can certainly deliver you.  Too many times I have failed to listen to God’s calling out.  I can’t do it.  I don’t hear His voice.  Someone else will do it, and do it better. I don’t know how.  I am not strong enough.  I can’t do it.  God can do anything.  God can and will certainly be with you.  He will enable you to the task He has called you to do.  I have come to believe that God doesn’t necessarily call the qualified.  God will qualify the called.

Most of the all-time Bible greats had some doubt or hesitation at some point in their lives.  What made them great was their unshakable faith.  Whatever it is God is calling us to do we must have unshakable faith and follow His lead.  Nothing is too big for Him.  Nothing is impossible for Him.  Through Christ we can do all things.  God tells us over and over that He will be with us.  That he will deliver us.  That He is our strength, Isaiah 30:31 (NIV):

but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint.
