What The Future Holds

Scripture:

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”  Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.  Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”  As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.  If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

Devotional:

One thing we know for certain is that the future is uncertain.  People throughout history have sought out those who can ‘see the future.’  We look for fortune tellers and profits to tell us what is to come.  We make plans all the time for our future.  We set short term and long term goals.  We ask our teenagers what they want to do when they get older.  They plan for college and eventual careers.  As we grow older we plan for our retirement.

When planning for the future do we include God?  How many times do we plan it all on our own instead?  God is all knowing and wants the best for us.  Jesus used a parable about a man who built new storage buildings for all his grain and crops.  He built places to store his wealth for future usage.  Jesus went on to say he was foolish for that very night his life would be demanded of him, Luke 12:16-20.  When we plan for our future we should do so seeking God’s guidance.  We can rest assured no matter what the future brings God is with us.  He is in control, he is our provider.  We should plan for the future but we need to include God in those plans.  We should not be surprised when the unexpected happens.  After all we do not know what the future holds for us.  The good news is that God knows and He is preparing the way for us.
