Helping Hands

Scripture:
Matthew 20:25-28 (NIV)

Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.  Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,  and whoever wants to be first must be your slave just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Devotional:

There are times when we all need a helping hand, even when we do not wish to admit it.  This is true even when we willingly and gladly chose the path we are on.  In some cases we may think no one can help.  Another thought could be that we believe no one would want to help.  Could it just be a simple matter of pride that prevents us from asking for help?  There are people who think that they can do it and they don’t need any help from anyone.  Perhaps nobody is offering to help.

Jesus Himself came not to be served by us but to serve us.  His example should be how we live our lives.  If you are unsure how to help all you have to do is think simple.  There may be nothing more to do than to provide a meal so that someone doesn’t have to spend the time and effort cooking.  Maybe you can offer to clean their house or office.  What about the never ending laundry pile?  Anyone can do a load of laundry.  Maybe a simple service of running errands for somebody that is too busy.  A short stint of babysitting is always helpful to give parents a short break.  Is somebody sick or hurt?  What can you do to help them?  Serving others doesn’t have to be big.  You don’t have to be a professional.  All you have to do is be willing.

Each of us needs a helping hand from time to time.  Our Lord and Savior came to serve others.  Are you better than He is?
