Loneliness

Scripture:
Genesis 2:18-23 (NASB)

Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”  Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.  The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him.  So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.  The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.  The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones,
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

Devotional:

No one likes to be alone all the time.  Loneliness can be devastating to us, even when we refuse to acknowledge it.  God stated in Genesis “It is not good for man to be alone.”  He knew we needed companionship.  We were never meant to live our lives in total isolation.  However, loneliness can come even when we are in a room full of people.  I once told a pastor that I could be in a room full of people and still feel all alone.  It is easy to feel alone in a crowd when you isolate yourself.  You might not know anyone, or no makes an effort to include you.

God created woman to be a companion to man.  The body of Christ is formed for fellowship with one another.  The church is made up of multiple families and individuals to create a new family of believers.  Each one is intended to help us not be lonely.  There are times when being alone is healthy.  It gives us a chance to be still and be close to God.  Being alone helps us reflect and work out different things in our lives.  There are times when we do want to be by ourselves, let’s face it a crowd can be overwhelming.  But too much loneliness is not healthy for us.  If you notice or even suspect someone of being lonely reach out to them.  You just might be what they need at the time.  Lots of people fear dying alone.  Why is that?  Genesis 2:18 “Then the Lord God said ‘It is not good for the man to be alone;’” God knew before hand being alone wasn’t healthy for us.  This week make the effort to reach out and touch someone.  One last thought, you are never truly alone.  God is always with you.

Deuteronomy 3:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
