Remembering God's Greatness

Scripture:
Joshua 4:1-7
(NASB)

Now when all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying, "Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe, and command them, saying, 'Take up for yourselves twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests' feet are standing firm, and carry them over with you and lay them down in the lodging place where you will lodge tonight.'"  So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe; and Joshua said to them, "Cross again to the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel.  Let this be a sign among you, so that when your children ask later, saying, 'What do these stones mean to you?'  Then you shall say to them, 'Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.' So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever."

Devotional:

Vacations, the birth of a child, a wedding, birthdays, graduation, and other events are all things we wish to remember.  We take pictures to capture the moment.  We purchase trinkets and other mementoes in order to remember something special.  As I am sitting in front of the computer I watch my youngest run through the living room singing.  As she runs by she looks at me and smiles.  I want to capture her face in my memory so I can cherish the moment for years to come.

In Joshua God tells him to get twelve men to grab twelve stones.  They are to build a memorial in order for the people to remember what God has done for them.  What has God done for you?  What memorial should you build so that you are reminded of God’s greatness?  If I pause long enough I can look upon my children and know God’s love, mercy, and greatness.  For God has blessed me with five wonderful children to cherish.  Time after time over the years I can see God’s hand at work.  He has delivered us, provided for us, protected us without failure every single day.  Why should I remember Him?  Simply, because He has done so much for us, He is worthy of our praise, honor, and remembrance.  One memorial we have hangs above our fireplace.  Years ago Nancy cross stitched a cross with flowers around it.  In the center are the words:

It wasn’t nails that held Him to the cross,
but His love for you and me.

As you walk across the living room you can see it sitting there as a reminder.  Find your reminder.  Build your memorial.  Do what you need to so that you never forget the awesome things God has done in your life…
